Georgia Vehicle Registration Services Explained

January 1, 2025 7 min read

Moving to Georgia, buying a new vehicle, or registering a car for the first time can feel overwhelming. Georgia's vehicle registration process has specific requirements, deadlines, and fees. Here's a plain-English guide to getting it done right — and how Hannor handles the details for you.

Who Needs to Register a Vehicle in Georgia?

Georgia requires every vehicle operated on public roads to be registered with the state. You must register within 30 days of:

• Becoming a Georgia resident

• Purchasing a new or used vehicle

• Moving from another state with an out-of-state vehicle

• Receiving a vehicle as a gift or inheritance

New Vehicle Registration Requirements

For new vehicles purchased from a dealer, you'll typically receive a temporary tag and the manufacturer's certificate of origin (MCO). For used vehicles, you'll need the signed title, bill of sale, and a completed Form MV-1. All registrations require valid Georgia insurance, a Georgia driver's license, and payment of the Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) or annual ad valorem tax.

Out-of-State Transfers

When moving to Georgia with an out-of-state vehicle, you must register it within 30 days of establishing residency. Bring your out-of-state title, current registration, proof of Georgia insurance, Georgia driver's license, and the vehicle must pass a Georgia emissions inspection if required. Your out-of-state title will be surrendered and a Georgia title issued.

Note for New Residents

Georgia's TAVT applies to most out-of-state transfers. This is a one-time tax based on the vehicle's fair market value. It replaces the annual ad valorem tax and can be a significant upfront cost — plan for it when budgeting your move.

Commercial and Fleet Registration

Business vehicles and fleet registrations in Georgia require additional documentation, including business registration, federal EIN, and in some cases commercial insurance. Hannor handles commercial registrations for small businesses, fleets, and company vehicles in the Hapeville area. Contact us for a custom quote based on your fleet size.
