Georgia Tag & Title Services: What to Bring and What to Expect

January 22, 2025 6 min read

Renewing a tag, transferring a title, or registering a vehicle in Georgia doesn't have to mean a long line at the county office. Here's exactly what the process looks like and how Hannor Safety & Driver Institute handles it for you on-site in Hapeville.

Tag Renewals

Georgia requires annual vehicle registration renewal by the primary owner's birthday. To renew, bring your current registration (or renewal notice), proof of valid Georgia insurance on file with the state, and a passing emissions certificate if your vehicle and county require one. Renewal fees vary by vehicle type and county — we'll calculate the exact total before you pay.

Title Transfers

When you buy, sell, or gift a vehicle in Georgia, the title must be transferred within 30 days to avoid penalties. Bring the original signed title, a completed Form MV-1 (Title/Tag Application), a valid Georgia driver's license, proof of insurance, and the bill of sale. If there's a lien, you'll also need lienholder information. We prepare every form for you on-site.

Common Mistake

Sellers often forget to sign the title in the exact spot indicated and write the odometer reading clearly. An error there can void the transfer and require a corrected title application — adding weeks of delay. We review every document before submission.

New Vehicle Registration

Newly purchased vehicles — whether from a dealer or private party — must be registered within 30 days of purchase. Required documents include the manufacturer's certificate of origin or assigned title, bill of sale, valid ID, proof of Georgia insurance, and payment for the Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT), which replaces annual ad valorem tax for most Georgia vehicles. TAVT is calculated as a percentage of the vehicle's fair market value.

Replacement Tags and Titles

Lost, stolen, or damaged tags and titles can be replaced through our office. For a replacement title, bring valid ID and complete Form MV-1. For a replacement tag or decal, bring your current registration and ID. Most replacements are processed the same day.
