Whether you're buying a used car from a neighbor, selling your vehicle, or inheriting one from a family member, a Georgia title transfer must be completed correctly and on time. Here's the full process — what to bring, what it costs, and how to avoid the most common mistakes.
What Is a Title Transfer?
A title transfer is the legal process of changing vehicle ownership from one person or entity to another. In Georgia, the Department of Driver Services (DDS) manages this process through the Motor Vehicle Division. Every title transfer must include a signed title, proper documentation, and payment of applicable fees.
Required Documents for a Georgia Title Transfer
• Original signed and notarized title (seller must sign in the exact designated area)
• Completed Form MV-1 (Title/Tag Application)
• Valid Georgia driver's license or state-issued ID
• Proof of Georgia insurance on the vehicle
• Bill of sale with purchase price and date
• Lienholder information (if the vehicle is financed)
• Odometer reading (for vehicles under 10 years old)
The 30-Day Rule and Penalties
Georgia law requires title transfers to be completed within 30 days of the sale or transfer. After 30 days, a late penalty of $10 applies, plus an additional $10 for every month the transfer remains incomplete. These penalties add up quickly — and delay your ability to legally drive the vehicle.
The seller must sign the title exactly where indicated. An incorrect signature placement, misspelled name, or scratched-out error can void the title and require a corrected title application — adding weeks to the process.
Title Transfer Fees in Georgia
Title transfer fees depend on the vehicle type and whether it is subject to the Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT). For most vehicles, TAVT is 6.6% of the fair market value. Older vehicles and certain exemptions may qualify for the annual ad valorem tax instead. Additional fees include the title fee ($18), tag fee, and any applicable penalties.
